NEXT MAGAZINE - With HKFSs current standing committee set to step down in March next year, comes the news that organizations affiliated with the Chinese Communist Party or purport to work on behalf of the Liaison Office are meddling with student union elections in Hong Kong universities. HKFS’s leading role in the Umbrella Movement is the prime reason that makes it a target of China’s greater United Front operation. At City University, two running cabinets withdrawn from an upcoming elections last Saturday on account of intimidations their members have received for their pro-democracy stance. Now one of the former cabinet members has revealed to Next Magazine the full story of why they have withdrawn from the race. Timson Kwok, formerly running for External-VP, told Next Magazine he was approached by two men who hinted to have ties with the Liaison Office; they urged Timson to cooperate with them and to get elected to HKFS with to help them “de-radicalize” it. They asked him ‘What does the Communist Party have most? Money and power.” Timson was promised that his future would be smooth sailing if he works for them. He rebuffed their demands. But uncertain whether other members of his cabinet were similarly approached by the two men or people like them, he decided it is better to withdraw from the race then to risk becoming tool of the Liaison Office. That decision then triggered a wave of intimidating phone calls. //
