NEXT RALLY Yesterday we had a victory in court, as well as a great rally outside the Immigration Department (see photos below and here), that has halted the deportation of the 65-year-old Afghan man. The case will be heard again in court on Thursday afternoon. We have called another rally outside the court: Rally outside court to stop deportation to Afghanistan 4.00-4.30pm this Thursday 6 February Supreme Court building, 184 Philip Street, Sydney If we win on Thursday afternoon, there will probably be another court date set for a later date. If not we will plan further protests against the deportation. The effort to do deport this man has now been criticised by the Afghan ambassador, after the government attempted to force it through without notifying the embassy, or the Afghan Refugees Ministry in Kabul. This 65-year-old asylum seeker has not lived in Afghanistan for 27 years and has no family or support networks in Kabul. Like many other asylum seekers who agreed to go back under coercion from Nauru under the Howard government, he faces danger and death. Join this protest to strengthen the calls to keep him here in Australia. If the deportation goes ahead it will be the first forced deportation to Afghanistan since boats began arriving from there in the late 1990s. There is a full report on the court case and the growing opposition at the ABCs website here More photos of the protest yesterday outside the Immigration Department, with about 40 people in the rain, can be seen here. If you havent already you can still sign our petition to Scott Morrison demanding he stop this deportation Get involved: Refugee Action Coalition meets every Monday at 6pm NSW Teachers federation building 23-33 Mary st, Surry Hills, walking distance from Central station
