NFIB Small Business Economic Trends Survey: Optimism Flat in - TopicsExpress

NFIB Small Business Economic Trends Survey: Optimism Flat in August NFIB’s latest small business optimism index shows that the regulatory climate is holding back small businesses from expanding and adding workers, based on a survey of 759 randomly selected small businesses in the organization’s membership last month. Optimism was flat overall throughout August, which was the fourth consecutive month of negative job growth for small business owners. A lack of leadership in the government is confusing small business owners, who are losing hope in tax reform improvements and are overwhelmed by health care deadlines. After taxes, the next most important small business problems last month were government requirements and red tape, poor sales, and the cost/availability of insurance. Chief Economist Bill Dunkelberg commented: “Overall, the Index of Optimism says the small business sector is going nowhere and that’s what it feels like. Consumer sentiment is falling so there is no wind in the sails of the consumption barge. It floats, but no speed. The Reuters/University of Michigan survey puts support of government policies at single digits. Owner uncertainty about government economic policy ranked in their top five business problems, no change on that front and as confusing as ever.” Regulatory reform would go a long way to improve dwindling optimism amongst small business owners, and is absolutely necessary to raise small business sentiments. sensibleregulations.org/2013/09/nfib-small-business-economic-trends-survey-optimism-flat-in-august/
