NFIR SUPPORTED - THE RIGHT TO STRIKE MOTION IN 43rd International Transport Workers Federation #ITFCONGRESS2014 AT SOFIA, BULGARIA The right of workers to withdraw their labour, to strike, is among the most fundamental of human rights. No democratic society worthy of the name can truly claim to respect the liberty of its citizens and deny them that right. Yet all over the world the right to strike is increasingly under attack by employers, governments, legislatures, judiciaries, and elements of the media. Where workers do choose to exercise their fundamental right to take industrial action, they are often being met with repression ranging from the sacking, detention and arrest of trade union activists to violence and murder. At the International Labour Organization (ILO), the Employers’ Group has embarked on a sustained and deliberate attack on the ILO’s supervisory mechanisms and challenged the very existence of the long established right to strike in Convention 87. In response, the Workers’ Group is endorsing a referral of the issue to the International Court of Justice.
