NFTI Science Text Set Project Conference, October 27–28 The NFTI Science Text Set Project conference will be held at the Columbus-Worthington Holiday Inn (N I-270, 7007 North High Street, Worthington, OH 43085) on October 27–28, 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Teams of K–5 teachers and librarians will learn how to construct science-themed text sets that are aligned to Ohio’s Learning Standards for Science and English Language Arts. Participating teams will: • Assemble two science-themed text sets that support inquiry-based learning • Evaluate children’s nonfiction literature for use in science instruction • Examine the reciprocal relationship between inquiry and literacy • Experience an inquiry-based science unit with an integrated nonfiction text set Each team will consist of five educators. Teams must include one librarian and at least one K–2 teacher. Other team members can be teachers of grades 3–5, additional librarians, additional K–2 teachers, curriculum coordinators, or principals. Participants will be provided: • An iPad mini to facilitate their work after the conference • One graduate credit from Ashland University for each team member • Set of professional resource books • Reimbursement for the cost of substitute teachers • Lodging for team members traveling more than 60 miles Participation is limited to 20 teams. Preference will be given to high-needs schools. Remaining spots will be awarded on a first-come basis. A district may submit applications for two teams (the teams must be from different buildings), but depending on interest, only one team may be accepted. The registration deadline is October 3.
