NGC 520 - a spiral galaxy in the constellation of Pisces - TopicsExpress

NGC 520 - a spiral galaxy in the constellation of Pisces NGC 520 was discovered September 13, 1784 by the English astronomer William Herschel. It is a size 11 type Sa spiral galaxy in the constellation Pisces pec. Angular dimensions of NGC 520 are 3.4 to 1.7 arcmin. This is a pair of colliding galaxies. The catalog Dreyer described as an object of weak, considerably large, extended to 137 °. Taking into account the available astronomical data concerning the transfer of NGC 520 the red, estimated the average distance of the galaxy from the Solar System, it amounts to about 90 million light-years, ie 27.80 Mpc. NGC 520 has a about 100 thousand light years in diameter. NGC 520 observed with the 45-cm reflector appears to us as an object rather bright, moderately large, elongated in the ratio of 5: 2-axis NW-SE, with a very unusual appearance. North-western region of the object is clearly brighter, you can see the regions of mottled structure. Disappears in approximately east-west, where it enters the region of irregular surface brightness with poorly defined edges. You could say that if there is a galactic police it would be difficult to determine which of these two galaxies caused the collision, which occurred about 300 million years ago. They lie at a distance of about 90 million light-years, which makes watching the events that took place a long time ago and we can see the current state of affairs. Taking into account all the data can be assumed that as a result of the collision, the two galaxies began to pull interstellar matter and develop it as tails. Maybe it was the interstellar dust has been destroyed or even some stellar formation, which provided the material for forming the tails. What we see in the foreground is a large amount of dust that glows in the deeper parts of it red. Another very similar example of colliding galaxies is NGC 4038.
