NH Board members, donors and friends gather to hear Executive Director Mark Okazaki thank outgoing board president Sally Bjerklie for her time of service, and to celebrate the support of Head Start and Early Head Start programs by Councilmember Tim Burgess and Sam Whiting, president of Thrive by Five Washington. Burgess and Whiting emphasized that high quality preschool programs work, and that a progressive city like Seattle must do more earlier to help our kids succeed. We strive to ensure that no child will have race as a predictor of success in their academic careers, Whiting said. Every child must start strong and in high quality preschools and kindergartens, Burgess added. NH was especially honored to have Jesse Epsteins nephew in the audience, for whom the new Epstein Opportunity Center is named. Named after Jesse Epstein, who led the effort to found the Seattle Housing Authority 75 years ago, the remodeled building now houses the Yesler Head Start Program operated by Neighborhood House, Seattle Housings Economic Opportunity Program and Youth Tutoring, sponsored by Catholic Community Services.
