NHS TOP-UP FEES A NECESSARY EVIL? Are NHS top-up fees a necessary evil? Top docs reckon we should get used to the idea of paying for treatment, free at point-of-use healthcare is unsustainable. They say we should only get core services free. It might go against Aneurin Bevin’s vision but with an ageing population, rising drug costs and cuts biting elsewhere, maybe it’s necessary? But what’s a core service? What should we pay for? Weight loss treatment? IVF? Cosmetic surgery? Smoking and drinking related conditions? Who decides?
