NHS fraudsters John Leigh and Deborah Wilcox hid under new identities in Cyprus John Leigh and Deborah Hancox held hands and smiled as they were reunited in the dock at Manchester Crown Court. But their defence counsel described the fate they both faced as a “crushing fall from grace”. The fraudsters had spent five years on the run, claiming to be husband and wife Jawad Kadhum Muhsin and Deborah Harrison. They stayed in a spacious bungalow in with their dog, surrounded by a large garden filled with olive and citrus trees in the town of Ozanköy. VIEW GALLERY They were well known locally as market traders. In court the pair claimed to have lost the cash they swindled, which forced them to clean houses and sell bric-a-brac on their stall. But they were seen several times at local night spots enjoying the high life in bars around North Cyprus, while an investigation by the Cyprus Today newspaper claimed the pair had tried to launch a string of property management businesses on the island. Because North Cyprus has no formal extradition treaty with the UK they were able to escape justice and hide their crimes from neighbours for five years.
