NIGER DELTA must reign. When the Europeans i.e. Portuguese first came to Nigeria in 1380, it was through the Niger Delta Region. They met the Ijaws who are the aborigines of Niger Delta. They left and the British rediscovered Nigeria in 1840, and also, interacted first with the Ijaws and entered into treaties of friendship and protection with Ijaw kings and chiefs. Paradoxically, when colonialism was introduced on January 1,1900 and the South and North were eventually Amalgamated in 1914, the Ijaws in the Niger Delta were deliberately forgotten in the political arrangement of Nigeria from 1900 to 1996 when Bayelsa was created by Abacha through a political clamour for self determination which metamorphosed into agitations for resource control anchored on true federalism through positive actions. Niger Delta now host the Presidency amidst ethnic chauvinist and religious extremist .
