NIGERIA BEFORE PRESIDENT JONATHAN President Goodluck Ebele - TopicsExpress

NIGERIA BEFORE PRESIDENT JONATHAN President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan became Acting President in February, 2010, and substantive President in May 2010. This was a particularly difficult time for the world and for Nigeria, in view of the persisting reverberations from the global economic crisis, as well as the uncertainty created by the prolonged absence of, and eventual death of President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua. On the global stage, there are only few recorded times when the world was grappling with economic uncertainties that were as significant as the ones in the immediate aftermath of the Great Recession of 2007-2008. And on the domestic front, the direct and indirect implications of these unsavoury global occurrences were creating palpable tension for policy maker, businesspeople, and households, especially in light of Nigeria’s fairly strong interconnectedness with th rest of the worl. In addition, there was significant political uncertainty on the unprecedented transfer of democratically bestowed power to a sitting Vice-President following the death of the President. Each of these events were extremely challenging by themselves. Yet, to have both occur at the same time was a great test of character for Nigeria’s leaders and of fortitude for its countrymen. This chapter builds a narrative around the global economic crisis that had exploded across the globe and the socio-political uncertainty that Nigeria was experiencing, both of which made for a stormy entry point for President Jonathan to take up the help. Moreover, the inherent difficulties that these events portended foe Nigeria are highlighted. The broad domestic socio-economic and political environment in which Nigeria was operating at the time are examined, with emphasis on vulnerabilities and challenges in the system.
