NIGERIA INDEPENDENCE!!! 54 YEARS OF NATIONHOOD!!! “Some say freedom is a gift placed in our hands by our forefathers. Some say freedom is a human right that none should be denied. Some say freedom is a privilege that can and will be seized if taken for granted. Some say freedom is the key that opens doors otherwise meant to imprison. Some say freedom is power to do, to be, to say, and to accomplish what the oppressed cannot. Some say freedom is a responsibility?a weight to be carried and shared by those willing to protect it. Perhaps freedom is all these things. But in my eyes, I see freedom as a treasure. It is a gem so rare and precious the fiercest battles rage over it. The blood of thousands is spilled for it?past, present, and future. Where true and unblemished freedom exists, it shines with perfect clarity, drawing the greedy masses, both those who desire a portion of the spoils and those who would rob the possessor of the treasure, hoping to bury it away. Without freedom I am a slave in shackles on a ship lost at sea. But with freedom I am a captain; I am an admiral; I am a scout; I am the eagle souring overhead; I am the north star guiding a crew; I am the ship itself; I am whatever I choose to be because I have freedom. It has become a norm that every 1st October Nigeria celebrate her independence from her colonial master>Britain. Today reminds every knowledgeable Nigerian that 54years ago we gained our freedom from the colonial master after prolonged slavery, and also educate those who aint aware, and its celebration will continue to enlighten those coming up of age as we progress. 54 YEARS OF NATIONHOOD!!! This year’s edition which is the 54th will be celebrated low-key as it was last year, 2013. Under normal circumstances, the celebration of any nation’s independence should come with funfare but for two years running if not more, it has become characteristic for our independence anniversary to be celebrated in a graveyard as the situation has become and this development no doubt calls for sober reflection by all Nigerians both at home and abroad. In the Nigerian family set up, it is only when a circumstantial unfortunate incident or development suddenly happens that a celebration which should under normal circumstances be celebrated with funfare is usually celebrated low-key. At this juncture, there is the need for us all, as citizens of Nigeria, to ask ourselves, why the celebration of our independence should be low-key in spite of our being labelled as the sixth largest exporter of crude oil in the world and labelling of ourselves as the giant of Africa with the biggest economy on the African continent? The answer may not be far-fetched. The bitter truth is that, apart from the myriad of social and political problems presently staring our country in the face, such as corruption and greed; there is insecurity of lives and property as recently showcased of violence which resulted in disruption of court sitting on the premises of a High Court in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State. There is also the soaring unemployment; the recent disclosure by the World Health Organisation that 75 per cent cases of suicide deaths in the world are recorded in our country, and the lack of power and potable water for the citizenry in spite of Nigeria’s existence as a nation for solid 54 years with abundant human and capital resources at her disposal. There is age-long widening gap between the rich and the poor on one hand, and between the leaders at all levels of governance in our country today and the led on the other hand; jettisoning of service to the people for personal aggrandisement by politicians and public office holders in our country. It is so indeed so glaring that incesant kidnapping, bombing, diseases, terrorism, filling the already filled pocket, legal robbery by public office holders where they no longer operate in a gold fish bowl, etc, characterised the countrys under-development, the question; who can make it right and restore the lost glory? It is you and I...major focuse on the Youth who must seize to make themselves tools in the hands of the aged professional failed leaders. Let us begin to do the needful. Let marking of this years Independence Celebration serve as wake-up call to all and sundry because Nigeria whether good or bad is the only country we can claim ownership of and whatever we make out of it is our sojourn call. Lets allow the aged spirit of Nationalism to propel us into action towards the road of better Nigeria. Come what may, am optimistic and believe in our strength. Long Live Nigeria!!! Happy lndependence and Happy Birthday. 9ja @54!!! PROUDLY NIGERIAN!!! Courtesy: Comrade Barrister Administrator Otis Genevieve Ogonnaya a.k.a Nnemummy.
