NIGERIAN NEWS TAXATION AS A PANACEA - Part 1 In reaction to tumbling oil prices in the international market, nations whose only economic mainstay is oil - of which Nigeria is one of them - are already jittery. Some economists including our government officials are beginning to whine that taxation is alternative. During his 2008 campaign, President Obama - a Senator then - promised that he was going to get money from the rich and pay the poor. The Nigerian politicians who have already started tanning industrialists - with all manner of taxation - will have reasons to deepen their cut. I did say then that the campaign promise - by Obama - was another ploy by politicians to deceive the public. I am only against the rich man who stole public money to become rich. Now that we are reverting to taxation to shower up the balance in the oil price difference, it may be time to start from the politicians themselves. We should know the pay packs of all government officials - from the Presidency, legislature, governors down to the councilors in the third tier. Government should not be rushing to tax industrialist who - under very hopeless circumstances and situations - provide the little jobs that are helping to absorb our youths. If anything should be done in the direction of industrialists, it should be to encourage them to pay more than living wages to their employees. And the best way to get the politicians to account for their loot is to know what they had before they ventured into politics and what they have over a period of time. The other area to look into - on taxation - is towards the Men of God who fly about in airplanes.
