NIGERIAN SOLDIERS IN NEED OF REORIENTATION We are already 15 years in democracy And no government has re-orientated Nigerian soldiers For them to know That they are servants but not masters That they wear their uniforms At the mercy of the civilian taxpayers That soldiers are not above the law Just a few days ago A two-star General drove after my car In Oshogbo His gleaming Toyota Prado Inscribed with two stars on its number plate Drove contrary to all traffic rules Lights at full beam at noon His boys were tucked in another lead van Open sided pick-up truck Armed with rifles and horsewhip Ready to deal with any bloody civilians That didnt give way quickly enough Yesterday in Lagos Soldiers went on rampage Burning BRT vehicles and beating people Reason? One of their own Was allegedly killed by a BRT bus Last year or so A British soldier was hacked to death By two deranged Islamic fundamentalists Just a hundred yards or so from the barracks The British soldiers did not go berserk They didnt take laws into their hands They left the matter in the hands of the British Police I can imagine what would happen If it was in Nigeria That a soldier was clubbed to death By civilians in front of a barrack The restoration of civilians dignity The banishment of cruelty to civilians by soldiers The deflation of soldiers overbloated ego Are some of the most important dividends of democracy Instead of asking for these Na RICE ma people dey fight for And I remember the ICON Fela Kuti.......... Se soldiers wey go fight Boko Haram Na dem they burn burn so? Se soldiers wey go defend citizens Na dem dey burn burn do? Na to burn burn Na eem dey sweet dem pass Oya oooo bring matches burn burn Oya ooooo Bring petrol burn burn Oya ooooo
