NIGHTCRAWLER (2014) Nightcrawler is a film that lives up to all the buzz, delivering a dark and satirical experience worthy of all audiences. Jake Gyllenhaal works the camera as one of the most unsympathetic protagonists you can imagine in a modern movie. In fact, he is an effective villain, and one of the best examples of one that we have had all year. The film takes umbrage with local news networks (and television “journalism” in general) in regards to their fixation on local crime and tragic accidents - specifically that of urban violence creeping into the suburbs, no matter how exaggerated or misleading. It is in this corrupt system that our once struggling thief and low level con artist finds surprising success. It is truly alarming how much I enjoyed watching a complete narcissist manipulate and destroy the people around him.
