NIMA OVERHEAD FOOTBRIDGE IS GONE During the week I was in Nima - TopicsExpress

NIMA OVERHEAD FOOTBRIDGE IS GONE During the week I was in Nima marketing, in Accra, conducting a research into understanding the daily challenges that female traders and hawkers undergo in informal (areas that lack proper spatial planning) markets in developing countries. I noticed at my arrival that something was missing. After a caring study I realized the metal overhead footbridge near the Nima market has disappeared.Whoever that caused it to be demolished is not a priority now. The concern is that the bridge had over time become a nuisance to the community, traders and buyers of the bustling market (Daily Graphic Tuesday, January 1, 2013) and therefore demanded its removal. Again the publication stated categorical that some community members demanded its removal because ”...the bridge had not been in use for the past five years” as such they never benefited from the bridge since its construction and from the past five years it has become a den for several nefarious activities. From the Daily Graphic report the only persons who profited from the bridge were …”mobile telecommunications firms which posted large format canvas on both sides of the bridge to advertise their products”. Hurray for the removal of the overhead footbridge however in a low income, densely populated and migrant community, especially near a market with low priced commodities, located on a highway where human and vehicular interaction is common, what is being done to separate humans and vehicles. The appropriate intervention is to find an alternative to the footbridge before any future catastrophe occurs!!!! Pictures, showing the status of the bridge before it was removed. And also an overview of human-vehicular interaction on the Nima highway
