NINE ELEVEN REMEMBERED Written by Peggy Wolf - June 2002 It’s been nine months since the horrific happenings of last September. The evil fingers of terrorism reached out, pierced, then wove themselves into the fabric of our homeland. The stars and sun still shine, the school bus comes for my young sons, flowers bloom, the morning mist still rises above the ponds and jet contrails once again streak across the deep blue sky. Much is the same and yet so much has changed. We were all familiar with Pakistan and Afghanistan, but now new “stans” and “bads” flow off our tongues. Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Jalamabad, and Islamabad are in the news daily as we fight a war without borders. We live in a fortress of a country that we falsely assumed was untouchable. New York, our mother city, was touched, brutally. The end of last month brought completion to the arduous job of the World Trade Towers cleanup, but the families wounded by the loss of lives will take much longer to recover. This tragedy is more than about us, it’s about the whole world. Evil has a new face in Osama bin Laden and other stealthy followers who, in the guise of religion, scheme to suppress our joy, steal our spirit, curtail our freedom and end our lives. There can be no true peace without freedom. We must not put on the face of fear. We must fight to keep freedom. During the Vietnam era of flag desecration and burning, I too, while enjoying all the benefits of a free society, wasn’t moved to profess patriotism. That was then, this is now. I’m saddened that my sons are coming of age in a suspicious and nervous world instead of the carefree and prosperous post WWII era in which I emerged. We are long overdue for a change of values in America. It is good to see our country now more united instead of divided. Being a nation of short attention spans, I pray that we will keep these critical needs in mind long enough to bring global change to insure that our children inherit the world they deserve.
