NJIT will never ask for you to respond via email with your account - TopicsExpress

NJIT will never ask for you to respond via email with your account information. Phishing attempts (fishing for information) use legitimate looking emails to encourage recipients to respond with personal account information (username, password, social security, date of birth). With this information it is possible that your account could be hijacked or your identity stolen. For years we have seen phishing attempts aimed at gathering information about financial accounts. A new trend has been to try and collect account information from college students and faculty. The most popular “phishing” scams are threats that your account will be deleted or locked out if you do not respond with this information. Attempts can be very realistic looking and in certain instances link out to Google forms to steal your personal information. If you have reason to believe that you have responded to a phishing attempt: Immediately reset your password https://mypassword.njit.edu/ Contact the HelpDesk (973)596-2900 or helpdesk.njit.edu. Save a copy of the email for the HelpDesk to review. The only way to stay protected is to never REPLY to an email with personally identifiable information such as account names, passwords, social security numbers, dates of birth, etc. Never open attachments unless you trust the sender.
