NLRB: College Football Players May Unionize The National Labor - TopicsExpress

NLRB: College Football Players May Unionize The National Labor Relations Board in Chicago has ruled that football players at Northwestern University are employees and can unionize, the school said Wednesday. The ruling has not yet been posted to the National Labor Relations Board website, but in a statement, Northwestern acknowledged the ruling and says it plans to appeal. The players petition was a way to get a seat at the bargaining table in college sports and could change the landscape of the NCAA model. Northwestern University fought the petition by saying its players are students and not employees. Stand by for a player who is getting cut (and thereby losing his scholarship) due to mediocre performance or academic failures to challenge his loss of scholarship through his union. Well hear about players going to arbitration over playing time, or airing grievances about facilities, profit sharing or having a say in setting the future schedules. The universities will now have to pay players a stipend for living expenses. They will also have to put a cap on allowances that alumni donate to players. This whole union threat is just to get the NCAA to finally make some changes that shouldve been done 30 years ago. Universities make way too much money off their sports programs not to compensate players. Scholarships arent enough. Why should the NCAA reap billions and players nothing (other than the cost of their scholarship, of course) This is the first major decision on the rights of student-athletes to be treated like employees of other money making organizations. When you start paying players for their value as entertainers? Then you say goodbye to 95% of college sports. Perhaps they start a minor league to feed the NFL. cnn/2014/03/26/us/northwestern-football-union/index.html
