NO. 596 LG COMMISSIONER COMMENDS GOV AREGBESOLA ON ROAD CONSTRUCTIONS The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Barrister Kolapo Alimi has commended Governor Aregbesola for the giant strides taken in roads rehabilitation across the state. He said that the giant strides and breakthrough recorded in the massive road rehabilitation in the state can be attributed to the ingenuity of Governor Rauf Aregbesola who has also distinguished himself as a great administrator. Barrister Alimi stated further that the Governor has also carved a niche for himself by his resolve on assumption of office, to set aside excess crude oil funds accrued to the state for great projects that the state is now witnessing at different locations in the state. He also said that after a substantial amount of money have been saved to a certain extent, the Governor then came up with the idea of using the money for the construction and rehabilitation of roads across the state. Barrister Alimi, however, concluded that the on-going road rehabilitations will be completed according to schedule. NO. 597 OSUN PARLIAMENT SUPPORTS AUTHONOMY FOR STATE PARLIAMENTS The State of Osun House of Assembly has drummed its support for the much desired financial autonomy for State Houses of Assembly in the country. The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Najeem Salaam, expressed this on the floor of the House while paying host to the Speaker, Ekiti State House of Assembly, who doubles as the vice-Chairman, Conference of Speakers Forum South-West Chapter, Rt. Hon. Adewale Omirin and his team on sensitization tour of South-West Nigeria on the need to drum support for the independence of the State Assemblies financially and administratively. Speaking further, Hon. Salaam said if the financial autonomy is eventually secured for the State Houses of Assemblies in the country, it would guarantee the real separation of powers and the rule of Law in line with the practice of true democracy. Hon. Salaam, who described the current Assembly in the State as a rancor free, peaceful and progressively minded one, also promised to make the State House of Assembly Service Commission fully functional to meet the desired needs in line with administrative independence. Earlier in his remarks, the Speaker, Ekiti State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adewale Omirin said the Conference of Speakers in the country of which he is the Vice-Chairman South-West saw the need for a concerted effort to ensure an overwhelming support for the financial autonomy of the Legislature, which he said, informed the ongoing nationwide sensitization of Members of the State Assemblies. He, therefore, said the Legislature, which is the first arm of government must be financially autonomous to make it virile, potent and courageous so as to be on the side of the people who elected them while carrying out their oversight functions of check and balance on the Executive. On the entourage of the Ekiti Speaker were Mr. John Mutu, the Coordinator of SAVI and Barrister Oscar Okoro. NO. 598 A BABY GIRL ABANDONED A baby girl abandoned by her parents has been discovered under a car at Ajigbona Street in Modakeke-Ife. A press statement signed by the Permanent Secretary in the State Ministry of Women and Children Affairs, Mrs. Kemi Kolawole, enjoined those who know the biological parents or relations of the abandoned baby girl to contact the Director of Social Welfare, Mrs. Grace Adegoke child in the Ministry at the State Government Secretariat NO. 599 OSUN AWARD UNIOSUN ROAD The Government of the State of Osun has awarded the construction and dualization of access road to Osun State University main campus Osogbo to Messrs Kudwin Investment Nigeria Limited, at the cost of #624,708,66.60 with the mobilization of 15% of contract sum. Signing the road contract agreement on behalf of the Governor, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Works and Transport, Engr. Oladepo Amudah, disclosed that the contractor is ready to finance the total length of the road which is 1.87km on behalf of the state government. According to him, the road that would be completed in the next nine months with the repayment of 36 months duration will involve 2 layers asphaltic surface, 50mm binder and 30mm wearing, reinforced concrete side drain, culverts, crushed stone base course, earthworks and street lights. Engr. Amudah, stressed that the present road does not befit an academic institution like a university. According to him, when completed, the road would look like that of the main road leading to and fro the main campus Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife. The Special Adviser therefore warned the contractor to deliver a good job according to specification while noting that the present administration led by Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola will not hesitate to revoke any contract which does not meet the demand of the government. Responding behalf of the company, Engr. Emmanuel Adegbite, thanked the government for given them the opportunity to construct the road and vowed to deliver on time and according to specification.
