NO. 669 AREGBESOLA SENSITIVE TO ENVIRONMENT MATTERS – OYAWOYE Commissioner on Environment and Sanitation, State of Osun, Professor (Mrs.) Olubukola Oyawoye, has stated that the State Government will always welcome all good advice on Environment and Sanitation as well as other issues bordering on mitigation of climate change. Professor Oyawoye made this disclosure while hosting the Director General and Chief Executive, National Environmental Safety and Regulation Agency (NESREA), Abuja, Dr. (Mrs.) Ngeri Benebo, in her office in Osogbo. According to her, as a result of the enormous challenges confronting the state from the past, the Rauf Aregbesola’s government, promptly on assumption of office declared a ninety-day emergency on environmental sanitation and healthy living throughout the State. She added that, the government simultaneously commenced the dredging of water ways and canals and within one year, had dredged over two hundred and thirty kilometer length and breadth of the state. The Commissioner also disclosed that government also embarked on a massive mobilization and sensitization of the public on environmental sanitation, hygienic dumping of wastes and tree planting. Professor Oyawoye further added that the Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola’s government proceeded with a two-pronged approach christened ‘O’ Clean and ‘O’ clean Plus, and the deployment of sixty-three waste trucks and about 235 bin vehicles throughout the State. The Director-General, NESREA, Abuja, Dr. (Mrs.) Ngeri Benebo, in her address at the occasion stated that President Goodluck Ebere Jonathan directed her to quickly embark on sensitization visits to the thirty-six states of the Federation and Abuja consequent upon the forecast by the Nigerian Institute of Meteorological Agency (NIME) Abuja that the delay in the commencement of early rains this year may likely lead to concentration of rainfall within June and July, throughout the country. Dr. Benebo maintained that in order to mitigate the incidence of the heavy flooding that wreaked havoc in many parts of the country in 2011 and 2012, the more vulnerable states, including the State of Osun need to mobilize the public, especially against waste dumping in water channels or canals. The NESREA Director canvassed that the massive flooding experienced in the country so far has been alluded to blockage of water channels by waste or concrete blocks by the people. NO. 670 AREGBESOLA HAS TAKEN OSUN TO GREATER HEIGHTS – OYAWOYE Osun State commissioner for Environment and Sanitation, Prof. (Mrs.) Olubukola Oyawoye has stated that Governor of the State of Osun, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, has taken the state to greater heights since November 2010 when he took over as Governor. Professor Oyawoye made this commendation on Saturday while commenting on the Excellence Academic and Professional Awards given to her and other eminent sons and daughters of Ede by federal council of Ede Descendants Union. According to her, if a scientific and honest appraisal of all projects executed so far by the Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola’s government is made, it will be discovered that all the projects, no matter where they are located, have been to the benefit of all the state indigenes. She disclosed that, the milestone developments being carried out by the State Government at the airport site at Ido-Osun, for example, has provoked the installation of a National Weather Control Tower, which has begun to produce data and weather forecast for the benefit of the entire citizenry. The Commissioner further disclosed that the completion of the airport in due course will promote commercial activities in addition to easing the transportation problems of the ever growing cosmopolitan people of the State. Other eminent scholars and professionals who received outstanding awards at the occasion included retired Deputy Inspector-General Adedayo Adeoye, Professors (Mrs.) Mosunmola Obidike, Siyan Oyeweso, Abimbola Adebomi and Iysa Bello. NO. 671 RAIN SHALL FALL IN THE STATE OF OSUN THIS WEEK Citizens of the State of Osun should expect rainfall in the early days, this week. This is contained in a weather forecast collected from the National Control Tower, Ido Osun in Ede. According to the forecast, the early morning mist of Tuesday shall lead to light breeze while moderate rain is expected later in the day. On Wednesday 10th July, the early morning mist and light breeze shall lead to rainfall before noon and the rainfall shall extend towards afternoon and night. Thursday 11th July shall experience light air with moderate early morning rain, afternoon and night. Generally, there should be a little increase in heat, during the week. NO. 672 FIVE HUNDRED VULNERABLE CHILDREN BENEFIT FROM EDUCATIONAL AND NUTRITIONAL MATERIALS The idea behind the distribution of educational and nutritional materials to almost five hundred vulnerable children in the State of Osun is to promote healthy living as well as banishing hunger. Commissioner for Women and Children Affairs Mrs. Mofolake Adegboyega stated this at the occasion of the distribution of Educational and nutritional materials to vulnerable children held at the premises of the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs. Mrs. Adegboyega reiterated that the present administration is committed to programmes and projects that are geared towards alleviating the problems being faced by women and children. She said the challenges posed by vulnerable children has made government, development partners and individuals to realize that more responsibilities have to be shouldered by them, saying if the matter is not adequately addressed it would cause danger to the larger society. Earlier in her address of welcome, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Women and Children Affairs, Mrs. Funmilayo Eso Williams, stated that vulnerable children should not be stigmatized but rather be given adequate attention in line with the Child Rights Law, while calling on the immediate communities of the children to take responsibilities for their care. Mrs. Eso Williams also commended the Governor, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola on his effort towards eradicating poverty as it affects women and children. She advised Local Government authorities to join hands with the state government by making budgetary provision for vulnerable children. Materials distributed at the occasion included food stuffs, beverages, school bags, mathematical sets and other educational material. Present at the occasion were the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Women and Children Affairs, Mrs. Oluwakemi Kolawole, Directors of the Ministry, representatives from line ministries, non-governmental organizations, and children among others. NO. 673 INFORMATION OFFICERS CHARGED ON ADEQUATE NEWSREPORTING Information Officers in the service of the Government of the State of Osun have been urged to report activities of the state in details to positively inform the public about activities of the state government. The State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Sunday Akere, stated this while addressing the newly recruited Information Officers at the hall of the Ministry. Hon. Akere said judging from the fact that the State Government does not believe in propaganda, the new officers are expected to be responsive in duty, adding that truancy among the officers will not be entertained. He also encouraged them to look beyond news reporting as they will be expected to write documentaries, news talks and special features on government activities. In his speech, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Engineer Segun Aduroja, said the new officers will be exposed to the professional practices obtainable in the Ministry through series of trainings within the shortest possible time before being posted to places of assignment. He therefore appealed to new officers to take advantage of everything they are taught as it will go a long way in proving their mettle on the job, saying every officer should see himself or herself as a member of one indivisible family.
