NO RESISTANCE NO ORGANISATION I was in a Garbeta area of Midnapore yesterday. On the sidelines of what I was doing, I met up with some old comrades of the CPI(M) and they narrated to me a most bizarre thing. In some villages CPI(M) members have taken BJP membership. But it is NOT because they give a damn about the BJP but simply because that gives them protection. Trinamools violent political bullying has been quite uninterrupted in regions away from prime time glare. And in those parts being CPIM is like being an open invitation to getting mugged in broad daylight. The zero fear of retaliation emboldens the TMC. However the BJP state leadership has been very active in assisting its members in resisting physical violence and has been by their side for the legal processes thereafter. And despite the denials, the Modi-Shah government through the use of the CBI struck fear in the TMCs heart so Didis bhais arent very keen to mess with the BJP members. So becoming BJP is the best bet these poorer non celebrity comrades have of staying safe in the remote areas. When I asked about the stark ideological problem with what they were doing, a village unit level cadre (whose been an active CPIM member for over 24 years now) said - aschhey election a vote ta at least ditey parbo [being BJP will at least ensure my name isnt struck off the voter rolls] There are similar stories in Birbhum too and there too I met staunchly Communist local committee (CPI(M)s most important tier of ground work in Bengal) members who are forced to camouflage their political affiliations. Though in smaller numbers, similar cases exist in Darjeeling, Hooghly and Bardhaman districts. But what sets aside Garbeta is this was the famous site where during Jyoti Basu-Anil Basu times the TMC-Jharkhandi uprising attempts were superbly out maneuvered by the CPIM. The amazingly skilled manner in which the armed dacoits organized by Mamata (under the name of mukti joddha if I remember correctly) and their heralds the ABP+Bartaman were handled is part of political folklore now.
