NO SALARY REDUCTION FOR SPECIAL CONSTABLES Government has once again refuted allegations that it has reduced salaries of special constables under the Botswana Police Services. Minister of Defence, Justice and Security, Mr Dikgakgamatso Seretse told Parliament that there were no plans to reduce salaries of special constables. “If anything, any consideration made would be to improve it. What appeared to be a reduction was rather a correction,” he said in response to a question on November 26. Mr Seretse explained that for some strange reason, special constables were paid wrong amounts, instead of the correct 22 day month salaries. He said some were wrongfully paid on 30 day month, others 35 days, while in some extreme cases others were paid 45 day month. “The police authorities are currently involved in an audit to see the extent of this unfortunate situation and will subsequently decide on how to recover and what action to be taken for those responsible for the situation,” said the minister. Francistown South MP Mr Wynter Mmolotsi had asked the minister to explain why special constables’ salaries have been reduced, and measures put in place to ensure that the reduction does not put them in financial difficulties.
