NOIR ~ A Poem in Black and White ~by Dennis Saran (dedicated to the shades of Bogie and Bacall) wandering into this dive time seeming disjointed and out of phase no color only sepia tones and shades of grey as i approach the bar a jazz combo takes the stage i order bourbon and they begin to stumble into an off key and down tempoed rendition of Night in Tunisia wincing whether from cheap whiskey or bad jazz or both i dont know surveying the room unsure who i seek a sparse crowd of well heeled Angelinos toasting each other with watered down martinis and gin rickies playing at being children of the night trying their luck at the tables a matched pair of gunsels lurk around the fringes Guidos in pinstripes watchfull angry bored seeming the bugeyed gent at the blackjack table seems on the verge of pulling a pistol and screaming in some incomprehensible accent the roulette wheel is all too conveniently stopping favorably for the tall blonde in the low cut gown scents of corruption and decadence slow moving ceiling fans doing little in the still summer air merely wafting around this poisonous atmosphere an noxious mixture of stale beer, Chesterfield smoke and barely contained violence i keep expecting Sidney Greenstreet to walk up to me and whisper something sinister ~ i wish i had a fedora strange dreams when falling asleep with the classic movie channel on TV
