NORENA Backhouse - a wonderfully dedicated volunteer with the Friends of the Friarage Hospital - has recently retired after 23 years working at the hospital. Norena, 85, who lives in Thornton Watlass - a nurse in her earlier career at Little Ripon Hospital - ran the original hospital coffee shop for many years. She moved to the new one when it opened in January 2003 efficiently completing the shop’s volunteer rota for many years and ensuring it ran smoothly. Norena said: “I have really enjoyed my time as a volunteer. It was a very happy shop and I enjoyed meeting people and the lovely hospital staff. It was a pleasure helping to raise money to help the Friarage Hospital which is a cause close to all our hearts.” She is keeping up the good work and still lending a helping hand by taking a collection tin round the village where she lives for the Friarage MRI scanner appeal. Chairman of the Friends of the Friarage, Dr Upendra Somasundram, was delighted to present her with a bouquet. He said: “We would like to thank Norena for her caring service as a volunteer and her dedication and commitment to the Friends over the years.
