NOT A VERY BIG MAC Following yesterday’s dangerous posting I’m hoping today that the ‘Mac’ in ‘Fleetwood’ isn’t Mack the Knife…….. Audience supported Fleetwood Mac at Leicester 44 years ago tonight but this was neither the original line-up nor the later, long running pop version. So we weren’t treated to Peter Green’s sublime guitar playing nor anything much that reminded one of the band’s three founder members’ history with John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers. Instead we got the Jeremy Spencer everything-starts-with-an-Elmore James-slide-riff version that at least had the merit of Green’s protégé Danny Kirwan playing the occasional piece of soulful blues whenever Spencer gave him a look-in. The line-up included a newcomer - ex-Chicken Shack keyboard player Christine Perfect - who would subsequently marry bass player John McVie and remain in the band for the next 400 years, as would John’s co-founder Mick Fleetwood. Mac weren’t particularly enjoyable. Without Peter Green there was little to distinguish them from any other average blues band of the era and the doldrums wouldn’t lift until Spencer ran away with a religious cult, gave us all a break from the Elmore James songbook and the rest of the band began to move into a new, non-blues-based direction. Also on the bill at Leicester was Lindisfarne - still relatively unknown; one of our regular supporting bands; and more fun than the headliner. Oh well, at least Jeremy was confined to maracas on this one….. https://youtube/watch?v=KE4HGlmtOcg
