NOT SO PRIVATE, AFTER ALL At the age of 19, Seema* was gang-raped by four of her classmates. When Seema and her parents decided to seek justice, they had no idea what a rape trial would entail. Seema broke down repeatedly during her trial, where she had to face the accused every day and answer questions that made her relive her trauma. Seema, her mother and a social worker were the only three women in the courtroom. Surrounded by men—the judge, the lawyers and the accused—Seema felt alienated and humiliated repeatedly. Her image was splashed on television—and although it was blurred, the images of those accompanying her were not, making her identity easy to guess. It became impossible for the young girl to go back to her college and focus on her studies. Seema’s parents were ostracised. Is it any surprise then that Seema and her entire family turned hostile.
