NOTES FROM THE WRITERS DESK: Todays NftWD post is brought to you by Jenni Johnstons following question: Have any of your works ever been adapted for film or television? How easy/difficult do you think it would be to allow someone else to interpret your characters, especially if their vision differed in a material way from yours? My answer: Oh no. Im not even a blip on that kind of radar. :D Hmmm, never thought of that because the possibility of something like that seems so unlikely and far out, however, just for grins and giggles... Honestly? It would depend on how much they paid me for the rights and any follow-up royalty. Vastly different and ridiculous? Id grit my teeth and think of England or at least my bank account as a monetary salve. Hollywood can do some really weird shit sometimes, and Im sure Id have more than one WTF?! moment if I watched a movie made from one of my books. That being said, sometimes they get it right, much to everyones surprise. I remember wondering what the casting directors were smoking when they chose Tom Cruise to play the part of Lestat in Interview with a Vampire. I just couldnt see it, but after watching the film, I thought Cruise did a good job. It worked--at least for me. I think if youre a writer involved in the commercial side of writing and not the hobby side, you have to let go of your work to a great extent. It becomes that free-standing product thats subject to interpretations of character that can be and are often entirely different from what you envisioned. That being said, if I managed to sell rights of one of my books for the purpose of seeing it in celluloid, Id be so gobsmacked and amazed, Id be okay-pretty swell-fine with whatever they did, even if they cast Peter Dinklage (who is awesome by the way) as Silhara and Roseanne Barr as Martise. I have an appreciation for the odd. ;) Todays eye candy brought to you by twisted, warped and still hawt: Most of the time, I prefer facial features a little more care-worn and not pretty. That being said, I deviate from time to time. This is one case, and also an instance where I know hordes of fans agree with me :) : bbcamerica/anglophenia/files/2013/10/loki.jpg
