If theres any interest, it is from a Japanese TV series called Saka no Ue no Kumo (Clouds Over the Hill) and this takes place in one of the episodes. It is based off of the novel of the same name, taking place in the Meiji period and following three characters from childhood, through the First Sino-Japanese War, and finally the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-1905. I think the book might be fully translated into English by now so I might pick it up at some point, and hopefully it is available with subtitles or even in a good English dub somewhere.
