NOTICE: New hope on ASUU Strike. ASUU Strike: FG Resolved To Open Nigerian Varsities Next Week With Or Without ASUU The latest news coming your way on ASUU strike is that the FG is set to open Nigerian Universities with or without ASUU. President Jonathan will on Monday, November 4, meet with the leadership of ASUU at the Presidential Villa. An official of the Vice President’s office who pleaded anonymity told Scan News that all hands are now on deck to ensure that the Universities resume next week. The President will at next Monday’s meeting present to the ASUU leadership the administration’s last concession for them to call off the prolonged strike. Vice President Namadi Sambo and a top education official made progress when they spoke with the ASUU leadership, but the involvement of the president is to show the union “that there is the commitment of the FG at the highest level. A source at the Presidential Villa noted that if ASUU fails to call off, the FG will then resort to plan B, which will be to compulsorily open the Universities, using the instrumentality of the governing councils and the school managements. Already, most of the governing councils of the Universities have started meeting to work out modalities for the compulsory re-opening of the Universities should ASUU fail to honour the personal request of President Jonathan. It was gathered that security report available to the Presidency may have necessitated this line of action to salvage the Universities system from the direction it is facing at present. However, senators recently expressed shock over the union’s demands, claiming that they are far too much. The lecturers are asking for, among other things: maternity leave, housing loan, sick leave, injury pension, vehicle loan/car refurbishing loan, postgraduate supervision allowance, teaching practice/industrial supervision/ field trip allowances and honoraria for external moderation of undergraduate and postgraduate examinations. Senate President David Mark said that the union members were unfair to Nigeria. In a second report, SERAP drags FG to UN over ASUU strike Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP, has dragged the government of President Goodluck Jonathan to the United Nations Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights over “a serious breach of the obligations by Nigeria under the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights to progressively realise the right to education in accordance with the country’s maximum available resources.” The group said: “This fundamental breach is due primarily to the persistent refusal by the government to honour the agreement with members of ASUU.” In the petition, SERAP’s Executive Director, Mr. Adetokunbo Mumuni said: “Although the govt in 2009 agreed with ASUU to improve the governance structures and funding for the operation of universities across the country to around 26% for the period covering 2009-2020, the terms of the agreement have remained largely unfulfilled. “Conditions of service for staff members of the country’s universities remain very poor. “Further the right of the students to freedom of assembly and association is not fully and effectively respected by the authorities.” The petition sent to the committee through the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Ms Navi Pillay, also stated that, “under international law, Nigeria is required to demonstrate that, in aggregate, the measures being taken are sufficient to realise the right to education for Nigerian children in the shortest possible time using the maximum available resources.” And in other headlines, ASUU Strike: Police stop lecturers protests in Benue, Kano, Sokoto.
