NOUN produces better quality graduates - VC THE Vice-Chancellor of the National Open University of Nigeria, Professor Vincent Ado Tenebe, has said that the quality of graduates produced from the system is better than that of conventional universities. He stated this, just as experts from over 60 countries in the world would converge on Abuja on Monday to brainstorm on the use of Open Distance Learning (ODL) to improve access to higher education. Ado Tenebe, spoke at a pre-event news conference for the 7th Pan Commonwealth Forum on Open Learning, holding in Abuja from 2nd to 6th December, 2013. He disagreed with the perception in some quarters that graduates from NOUN were of inferior quality to their counterparts from conventional universities. He said with time, NOUN would prove to all Nigerians that its graduates were of far better quality because of the use of modern technology in training them, as well as the skills they acquired from the system. He pointed out that all academic programmes of NOUN were accredited by the National Universities Commission (NOUN) as obtained in the conventional university system and in conformity with the world best standards. The Vice-Chancellor disclosed that the University, which started at inception with admission of 32, 000 now has over 180, 000 students across its 52 study centres in Nigeria. He added that the University recently graduated over 7, 220 students whose quality and competences were comparable to other graduates anywhere in the world. He said the 7th Pan Commonwealth Forum expected to be declared open by President Goodluck Jonathan would enable Nigerians appreciate and gain further knowledge on ODL as flexible, efficient and cost effective mode of acquiring higher education. He said the international conference with a theme “Open Learning for Development: Towards Empowerment and Transformation” has other sub-themes such as “Girls and Women’s Education, Skills Development, Promoting Open Educational Resources, Innovation and Technology and Institutional Development”.
