NOURSE FARMS IS VERY PLEASED TO INTRODUCE THE . . . . N A T U R A L . A L B I N O ® . P I N E B E R R Y . . . . (U.S. Plant Patent 24,332) Also known as Hula Berry™ as a nod to the hint of pineapple in its flavor. As people began travelling more in the 16 and 1700s, they also began moving and trading plants around the world. North American strawberries (fragaria Virginiana) and South American strawberries (fragaria chiloensis) were brought to Europe, where they cross-pollinated and created strawberry plants with varying characteristics. Dr. Hans De Jongh, a Dutch strawberry breeder, has been working with old pineberry varieties and traditional breeding practices with the intent of increasing berry size, yield and improving overall performance. He recently released a distinct and improved variety, the Natural Albino® Pineberry which has a striking color and great flavor. Considered one of the best pineberries available! . . * Dramatic color . . * Excellent flavor & aroma . . * Unique small berry (about the size of a nickle) . . * Winter hardy These pineberry plants are not self-fertile…they need pollen from a different variety to produce its distinctive fruit. We have chosen a red variety, Sonata (U.S. Plant Patent #18,000) for cross-pollination, another Dutch variety known for its distinctive flavor. Every other row or every other plant must be a self-pollinating variety, so plants are being sold as a set which includes 15 Natural Albino® (Hula Berry™) plants and 15 Sonata plants. This year we have traditional, bare-rooted plants available.
