NOVEMBER 1, 2013 Event, Binghamton, NY New Venue Hosting 9 PM Concert, “Dia de Los Muertos” Art Show. Several Photography Exhibits Among Highlights of Next First Friday Art Walk - NOVEMBER 1 Halloween may be over, but the “Fiesta” party continues at November’s First Friday on the 1st! Celebrate “Big Art in a Little City” in Binghamton, NY, with varied, eclectic choices … “Dia de Los Muertos” art show and “Fiesta” late night, music performances, photography exhibits, new venue hosting a concert, and more! That means start artwalking early to take in all the arty offerings and stay late! Be sure to catch the concert hosted by the newest First Friday venue, Triple Cities Carousel (monthly arts/culture newspaper) at Binghamton’s Cyber Café West (176 Main St.) at 9 PM, featuring Black Mountain Symphony from Albany/Saratoga Springs, NY, area. The five piece Black Mountain Symphony will showcase an eclectic range of influences, blended together to create their own sound, incorporating Baroque classical violin, folk-tinged ballads, funk-rock drums, and hard-hitting dance numbers in their live performances (from classical music to Motown, blues and jazz). (Triple Cities Carousel is a free, independent, monthly arts and culture newspaper of the Triple Cities area.) Kick off your First Friday at The Red Tent Studio (205 State St., 2nd Fl., Artists’ Row), with “Dia de Los Muertos” Eclectic Multi-Media by artists Mary Reynolds, Yvonne Lucia and Liz Tilley. Guest artist Reynolds from Ithaca joins The Red Tent Studio in celebrating “Dia de Los Muertos,” the Mexican Day of the Dead to honor departed ancestors and pay homage to Death, the great equalizer. Later there’s the late night “Fiesta” and “Dia de Los Muertos” celebration at Lost Dog Café (222 Water St., corner Henry St.), featuring Sonando performing Latin Jazz music from 10 PM-1 AM in the lounge. From Red Tent, continue to CoWork Binghamton (45 Lewis St., 2nd Fl., Lackawanna Train Station) with a First Friday exhibit from 6-9 PM, featuring Derek Lindow: “Parallel Visions” – Pen, Ink and Computer Illustration. CoWork Binghamton, opened to the public in September, represents a professional, collaborative, and creative work environment for Southern Tier freelancers, independent creatives, and startups seeking a dynamic downtown presence. A grand opening was held during the October First Friday. While downtown, visit PAST/Preservation Association of the Southern Tier (89 Court St., at roundabout) for “Homes and Historic Buildings of Chenango County” – Watercolor Paintings by Carolyn Neidlinger and available for purchase. From there, continue to Phelps Mansion Museum (191 Court St.) for Judith Present’s “Vietnam Photo Exhibition” on display First Friday from 5:30-8:30 PM. These photographs capture images associated with the Vietnam War. A short distance from downtown on the City’s west side is The Gallery at 5 Riverside Drive/Towers (5 Riverside Dr.), featuring art by Jan Peterson: Hand-pulled, Embossed Paper Prints–Images with Words, on display in the lobby and library (Thru Dec. 2013) and opening reception from 6-9 PM.
