NOW A SENIOR, THEN A SHOCK We regard Habit Rouge as a classic and mature fragrance, however Habit Rouge is the work of a very young perfumer. Jean-Paul Guerlain was only 28 years old when he created it. An excellent equestrian, he imagined a perfume that would capture the leathery odour of saddles and the fresh, woody scents of an autumnal forest. To attain the complexity of this olfactive task, Jean-Paul Guerlain came up with perfumerys first oriental for men. The young perfumers creation shocked the venerable old company. When he launched it, recounts Sylvaine Delacourte, his uncle, the boss, said to him, What have you done? What youve created is a fragrance for women, not for men! Men dont wear perfumes like Habit Rouge. Today, fifty years later, we know that men do indeed wear Habit Rouge. In fact, its still Guerlains best-selling mens scent in France. The original EdC version, now long gone, has been followed by several different variants of the Habit Rouge theme: EdC Dry, EdT, EdP, EdT Légère, LExtrait, Sport, and LEau.
