NOW ON SALE AT ONLINE STORE Staatsburg: A Village Lost in Time SEE PAGE FOR MORE DETAILS This new book takes a look at the Village of Staatsburg, Town of Hyde Park, NY, long known for the Staatsburgh State Historic Site, the former estate of Ruth and Ogden Mills. But few people are aware of the fact that prior to 1932 the villages main thoroughfare - Kings Highway and later Albany Post Road - was part of the main route between New York City and Albany. As such it accommodated travelers in multiple hotels, boasted significant industry such as the thriving ice harvesting operation and a huge coal and lumber yard and attracted tourists visiting the community to access activities along the Hudson River. The village once supported a stop on the New York Central Railroad line, had a semi-pro baseball team and was the site of a CCC Camp, a program established in 1933 by U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt. With many of the original 19th century structures still standing (now used for other purposes) and given the minimal vehicle traffic that the community handles today, the village features a quaint atmosphere that celebrates its past and embraces its present peace and calm. Read about its glorious past when estate owners maintained well manicured properties, when stagecoaches stopped at a still standing tavern and when the village was a center of activity for industry and tourism while still retaining its small town charm. This is Staatsburg: a village lost in time.
