NOW’S THE TIME FOR ALL RESCUERS AND PEOPLE WHO CARE ABOUT ANIMALS TO STEP UP TO THE PLATE ! The public hearing on the ordinance prohibiting the sale of live animals on public right of ways will be held on Monday July 28. (A copy of the ordinance is attached.) Subject: City Council Meeting Date: 7/28/2014 Time: 6:30 PM - 10:00 PM (public comments are at the beginning of the meetings.) Location: City Hall, 555 Liberty St SE, Council Chambers, Room 240 Even if you’re not comfortable with speaking in public, please come to the hearing and let’s fill up those seats and let the Mayor and Council know that we mean business. If you do want to make public remarks, you’re more than welcome to read an email that you sent to the Mayor and Council………all/any public comments are very welcome. Also, PLEASE send an email to the mayor and council urging them to pass this ordinance………..whether you’re a rescue (send a representative if you can’t make it) or someone who cares about animals in our community you need to speak for those creatures who are unable to speak for themselves—NOW IS THE TIME TO DO THAT ! Email Mayor Anna Peterson: [email protected] Email City Council: [email protected] Some reasons you might want to use in an email or public comments………everyone has good reasons to be against selling live animals on public right of ways: 1. Allowing people to sell animals on public property enables back-yard breeders and puppy mills which do not want people to see their operations and the poor conditions in which the animals are bred. 2. Selling puppies and kittens on sidewalks spreads disease and is dangerous to both the animals as well as people who come in contact with them. Parvo is a killer disease and is particularly lethal to puppies and distemper kills kittens. Animal shelters fear both diseases and have disinfection protocols to guard against it. After coming in contact with these animals on the street, people can track it home on their clothing and shoes to their own pets making them sick. 3. We’ve talked to the Wal Mart managers and other store owners and they don’t want people selling or giving away animals in front of their stores but when they call the police, there’s nothing the police can do as there is no ordinance against this on public property. 4. Allowing this practice also undermines the mission and work of rescues and shelters as well as stores like Petsmart and Petco that are working hard to promote adoption. If people have puppies and kittens, they need to contact the shelters and rescues in their community who can take them, get them vaccinated and fixed and find them homes. 5. Urge the city to come up with a thorough ordinance so that puppies aren’t sold and kittens aren’t given away to whoever walks by. We are the state capitol and we need to be better caretakers of our community and institute an ordinance offering a more humane environment for animals in Salem. At the very least please send an email and hope to see many of you on Monday evening. Any questions, let me know. ------------------------------------------ Lora Meisner Coalition Advocating for Animals (CAFA) Get it done while it’s only one, spay a stray cafaoregon.org 503-588-6924
