NPA rebels plan to attack Butuan City PNP station 5, police detachments? by Ben Serrano June 28, 2014 BUTUAN CITY- Now it can be told that the raid of the house of former police officer Leon Elorde Viajar was only a diversion because the original plan of the 30 fully armed New People’s Army rebels was allegedly to attack Butuan City Police detachments and some Butuan City Police Stations particularly Police Station 5 in Barangay San Mateo just few kilometres away from the raided house of retired police intelligence officer Viajar. This was the assessment and observation of Butuan City Public Safety Company Chief Senior Inspector Nefre Acaso saying the NPA rebels’ original plan was to attack Butuan City Police Station 5, City Police detachments in Barangays Nongnong, San Vicente and Bonbon, all urban villages here in Butuan City. Acaso made his assessment saying the 30 fully armed NPA rebels carrying assault rifles like AK47, M-16. M-14 and garand rifles who raided the home of retired police intelligence officer was an overkill in terms of number of conducted the raid. “Why sent 30 fully armed NPA rebels if only to attack a person less home of Mr. Viajar? Acaso in a live radio broadcast interview this morning aired over local radio station DXBC of the Radio Mindanao Network (RMN) said. Butuan City Police Director Senior Supt. Nerio Bermudo for his part told THE STAR in a mobile phone interview this Saturday morning agreed with the assessment of Acaso saying he himself already received similar intelligence reports that the NPA rebels operating here in rural barangays of Butuan City were planning to attack target areas mentioned by Acaso. Half of the total 86 barangays of Butuan City are rural barangays with some situated in hinterland and mountainous areas but only few kilometres from the urban center of Butuan. “In fact we already augmented police presence in said NPA rebels’ target areas that’s why maybe their plans to attack were foiled” Bermudo said. Bermudo confirmed that Viajar was retired police officer assigned before at the intelligence unit of the provincial police office in Agusan del Sur and at present security consultant of the Office of the Governor of Agusan del Sur. Viajar is close relative of Bunawan, Agusan del Sur Mayor Edwin Elorde and Agusan del Sur Board Member Elorde. “The rebels took only one shotgun from Viajar’s home since his .45 cal pistol was placed inside a vault and the NPA raiders failed to locate it” Bermudo added. Where the P27-M annual intelligence funds of Butuan City Mayor go? Due rising criminalities such as robberies, the daring broad daylight raid of Viajar’s house and also rising Akyat Bahay incidence in Butuan City, concerned citizens here started asking questions, where is the P27-M annual intelligence funds of Butuan City Mayor Ferdinand Amante, Jr.? Because of the daring broad daylight NPA rebels ‘ raid of Viajar’s house which is located at the heart of heavily populated Mandacpan, Barangay San Vicente, intelligence capabilities of the Butuan City Police also been questioned. Scrutiny of the P27-M augmented annual intelligence funds of the Butuan City Mayor came after no less the Butuan City Chief of Police admitted lack of police equipment, mobile patrols and lack of PNP personnel to guard all 86 barangays of the city. Earlier, no less than Agusan del Norte Governor Angel Amante admitted there was intelligence lapse by both military and the police in the raid of the house of Carmen, Agusan del Norte Mayor Ramon “Monching” Calo saying the house of Mayor Calo raided by the NPA rebels is just located across the town hall which houses the Carmen Municipal Police Office
