NPP Congress Live update on Breezefmghana The counting of ballots in the New Patriotic Party’s Delegates’ Congress to elect a flagbearer is currently underway. Please follow the results as they come in here. About 144,000 delegates in 275 constituencies cast their ballots to select one of three aspirants to lead the party to the 2016 Presidential election. Two-time flagbearer, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is facing stiff opposition from former Trade Minister Alan Kyerematen and MP, Francis Addai Nimoh. Mr Akufo-Addo is widely tipped to win the election but he must do so by a wide margin if he is to gain control of the fractured party. The supporters amidst sounds of jubilation have been poking fun at the other two aspirants, Alan Kyeremateng and Francis Addai Nimo, and singing hip life icon, Castro’s latest hit single. They have been singing songs to acclaim Nana Addo as the flagbearer for the party. 15:33 GMT 18-Oct-2014 We Need Unity So I’ll Organize Losers Party For Alan And Addai Nimo – Sir John Former General Secretary of the NPP, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie is overwhelmed with the provisional results from various polling stations in the ongoing flagbearership contest. According to Sir John as popularly called in politics, he is very optimistic Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will emerged as winner. Speaking to the media at Nana Addo’s residence at Nima, the former NPP Chief Scribe has promised to hold a feast for Nana Addo’s competitors after the elections. He explained that it will be a symbol for togetherness as the two; [Alan Kyeremanten and Francis Addai Nimo] will join to win power for the party in the 2016 elections. He further noted that, Nana Addo will not jubilate over the victory, “I will rather rejoice and organise a party for Alan and Addai Nimo” 15:33 GMT Alan Man Arrested… A known supporter of Alan Kyerematen, has been whisked away by the police for carrying two ballot papers at Kpando in the Volta Region. According to a Joy FM reporter, the man (name unknown immediately) is the constituency Youth Organiser in the NPP. Every delegate is entitled to a vote and so when a person is carrying two ballot papers, it is assumed that he or she wants to vote twice and that is why the constituency youth organiser has been arrested. Meanwhile, voting has ended in some polling stations and ballot papers are being counted. 15:15 GMT18-Oct-2014 Provisional Results: Nana Addo Wins at NPP Headquarters Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo has won the elections at the party’s headquarters by a landslide. Provisional results indicate that Nana Addo polled 99 votes out of 214 votes at the Headquarters while Francis Addai Nimo and Alan Kyeremateng polled 5 and 9 votes respectively. Nana Addo – 99 Alan Kyerematen – 9 Addai Nimo- 5 15:14 GMT18-Oct-2014 Addai Nimo Camp Cries Over electoral malpractices The Greater Accra Regional Spokesperson for Francis Addai Nimo, Charles McCarthy has registered his displeasure over some electoral malpractices he claims are being allowed at the NPP Headquarters where voting is in progress. According to the spokesperson, 214 names of delegates were listed in the voting register but the EC Officers claim some names had been omitted from the register due to some technical glitches. They therefore decided to add the omitted names to the list to make the total number 300 but the Spokesperson for Addai Nimo believes the inclusion of the names defy the constitutional provision guiding elections, CI 75. He also accused the Member of Parliament for Ablekuma West, Hon. Ursula Owusu Ekuful of interfering with the voting process. 14:50 GMT 18-Oct-2014 Provisional Results: Nana Addo Wins 4 Constituencies In Northern Region Though the 15:00 hours GMT scheduled for the closure of polling stations in the ongoing National Delegates Voting of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has not reached, four Constituencies in the Northern Region are done with counting of the ballot. According to the Northern Regional Chairman, Daniel Bugri Naabu, Nana Akufo-Addo had 197, Alan Kyerematen polled 1 and Addai-Nimo also managed 1 vote in the Salaga North Constituency. In Saboba, Nana Akufo-Addo had 299, Alan Kyerematen 2 and Addai-Nimo 0. “Also, in Gushegu 438 delegates of the NPP voted for Nana Akufo-Addo, 1 voted for Alan Kyerematen and 3 cast their votes in favour of Addai-Nimo, however, 8 ballots were rejected”. “Chiriponi. Kyerematen, an aspirant in the ongoing National Delegates Conference has bemoaned series of irregularities that is going on in some polling stations across the country. According to him, he has received reports that delegates in Savelugu and weija-gbawe are being coerced to vote for Nana Addo Danquah Akufo Addo. Apart from that about 25 delegates have also been denied access to cast their vote because they don’t have a letter which has been signed by constituency chairman. Speaking to Joy FM, Nana Ntow who voted at the NPP headquarters in Accra, said he doesn’t understand why the constituency chairman is behaving in that manner because the issue was thrashed out when it came in the limelight on Thursday. “We had the information that delegates were given those letters and so without them, you will not be allowed to vote. So far 25 delegates have not been able to vote because they don’t have the letters. Security people have been put at the entrance of the Amanokrom Community Centre (Eastern Region) and so anyone without the letter will not have the chance to vote…We have tried to bring this to the attention of the authorities” he indicated. 13:38 GMT18-Oct-2014 Court Places Injunction On NPP’s Ho Central Elections NPP Presidential Primaries election in the Volta Region has taken a new dimension as two constituencies out of the eligible 26 constituencies cannot take part in electing a flagbearer for the party in 2016 election. Akwasi Agyeman, One of PeaceFm’s Deputy News Editors, reports that there are court injunctions on NPP’s Ho Central and South Tongu Constituencies as two disparity albums appeared in these constituencies. Sixteen (16) members took to the courts as a result of a dispute over the Voters’ Album. Apparently there were two albums; one compiled by the previous constituency Secretary, and the other by the Chairman. One of the plaintiffs, the Deputy Volta Regional Women’s Organiser, Hannah Ashade is reported to have said that the party failed to unify the albums, hence the court injunction on the election in the two constituencies. 12:33 GMT18-Oct-2014 No One Must Harass Any ‘NDC’ Agent – Kwabena Agyapong Warns An Agent for Mr. Alan Kyeremanten in the Anyaa Sowutuom constituency, Isaac Robinson, was left red-faced when some delegates in the area accused him of being a member of the National Democratic Congress and demanded that he plays no role in their election process. Following this report, PeaceFM and Neat FM’s Adakabre Frimpong-Manso spoke to General Secretary for the NPP, Kwabena Agyapong, who emphatically stated that no delegate had the power to determine which agent was qualified to represent any of the candidates contesting in the election. According to him, when one is suspicious of the political affiliation of any person, the appropriate thing to do is to report it to their executives and not to act as enforcers of the law. Although the actual reason is yet to be known, Ogyampa reports that the EC officials insist coordination between them and the party’s executive have been porous. An executive of the China branch of the NPP, Dr Charles Dwamena had difficulty going through the election process when it was found out that his name was not in the register as a delegate but as a proxy voter. A footage obtained from Graphic.gh shows Dr Dwamena, who had been nominated by another member of the China branch, Dr Alex Amponsah to be his proxy, slightly bemused when it occurred that his (Dwamena’s) name was not in the register. By principle, Dr Dwamena’s name must be in the register in order for him to cast his ballot first and then vote for Dr Alex Amponsah. 11:34 GMT18-Oct-2014 Delegate’s Name Missing From EC Registered List At Adentan Constituency As many missing names have occurred in the ongoing NPP congress in many Constituencies, Adentan Constituency has recorded one missing name in the Electoral Commission’s Registered eligible list. According to Oman FM’s reporter, Asabea Kropah, the delegate’s name is captured in the NPP’s registered list but didn’t appear in the EC’s registered list. The name of the supposed NPP delegate is William Sodaya but the District EC officer, Robert is insisting he will not allow the delegate to vote as he has been given instructions to deny names that are not in the registered list of the EC. But speaking to the reporter of Oman FM, the delegate has threatened to vote by any means necessary as he cannot be denied his right to vote. “If they don’t allow me to vote, I won’t agree; I have to vote because my name is in the NPP registered list but not in the EC’s registered list,” William Sodaya said. Meanwhile, NPP District coordinator at the Adentan Constituency has confirmed knowing the delegate but EC officer is insisting he cannot allow him to vote per the instruction. According to the reporter, every attempt to reach NPP’s executives has proved futile. 11:30 GMT18-Oct-2014 Nana Akufo-Addo Arrives And Cast His Vote [PHOTO] Two time flagbearer of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo a few minutes ago, arrived at the Party headquarters to cast his vote. This is the third time Nana Addo is seeking to lead the party in an election. According to PEACE FM correspondent, Naana Ntiri, Nana Addo arrived at the headquarters amidst cheers from his supporters present. 11:27 GMT18-Oct-2014 Alan’s ‘NDC’ Agent Prevented From Doing His Work (PHOTO) An Agent for Alan Kyeremanten at the Anyaa Sowutuom constituency, Isaac Robinson, was forcefully prevented from performing his task by some delegates who claimed he is a member of the National Democratic Congress. According to Akua Edufa Aboagye, who is monitoring the exercise at that particular constituency, polling agents, the police, EC officials as well as executives of the party are all well-positioned at various points discharging their duties. “One interesting thing I have noticed is that the party executives are giving every delegate an amount of GHC10.00 after voting,” she recounted. 11:01 GMT18-Oct-2014 Slaps Flow At Atiwa East Over NPP Voter Register Electoral area coordinator and assembly man for Atiwa East, Mr. Donkor, has received hefty slaps for questioning his colleagues over the use of old register when there was a new one in place to be used in today’s election. In an interview with Peacefm’s regional correspondent for the area, ‘Boboobo’, Mr. Donkor revealed that he has been advised by the MP for the area, Hon, Amoako-Attah, Kwasi not to retaliate. 10:56 GMT18-Oct-2014 PHOTO: Delegates Receive ‘Takeaway’ After Voting Delegates at Bortianor Ngleshie Amanfro constituency are entitled to a pack of food after voting. At exactly 8am, voting started at this constituency and so far everything is going on smoothly. According to PEACE FM correspondent Akua Edufa Aboagye, delegates are lined up patiently waiting for their turn to vote and then after voting they will pick up their pack of food. 10:50 GMT18-Oct-2014 Missing Names Found Delegates whose names got missing at the Wulensi, Tamale South and Salaga South Constituencies have been found. 200 delegates at Wulensi, 20 delegates at Tamale South and Salaga South respectively, went missing when voting started at those constituencies. According to PEACE FM reporter, Kwabena Ntow, the EC had to fall on the local registers in those constituencies to resolve this issue. 10:47 GMT18-Oct-2014 Nana Addo Shakes Party HQ Candidate number one on the New Patriotic Party’s ballot paper, Nana Akufo- Addo, has finally arrived at the party’s headquarters to cast his vote. Peacefm’s reporter Nana Ntiri reports that he was greeted by tumultuous cheers by delegates who had also come to cast their ballot. 10:40 GMT18-Oct-2014 Tea Cup For Each Delegate @ Odododiodio Voting at the Odododiodio constituency is running smoothly according to PEACE FM reporter, DJ Yellowman. 837 delegates and 12 proxy voters are currently voting at the constituency. According to him, “one prominent thing at this constituency is that there are two dispensers and so every delegate is entitled to a cup of tea and water after voting”. 10:30 GMT18-Oct-2014 Dr. Bawumia Casts His Ballot At Walewale (PHOTO) Voting is ongoing in various polling centres across the country to elect a flagbearer for the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) today. Former running mate for NPP’s two-time presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia has cast his vote at his constituency in Walewale – Northern Region. All three [Nana Addo, Alan Kyerematen and Addai Nimo] vying to lead the NPP are very optimistic of wining the elections. 10:22 GMT18-Oct-2014 200 Names Missing In NPP Wulensi Register About 200 delegates in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Wulensi Constituency in the Northern Region are likely to be disenfranchised. This is because their names are missing in the voters register which will enable them to take part in the exercise. Citi News Correspondent in the Northern Region, Karim Natugmah reported that Tamale South and Salaga South have also recorded similar instances. He said: “Reports reaching me from three constituencies in the Northern Region having to do with Wulensi, Salaga South and Tamale South indicate that there are problems there. For instance in Wulensi, about 200 names are not in the register and these people will not be allowed to exercise their franchise so far as today’s poll is concerned. At Tamale South they told me that some delegates names are absent on the list and it is the same problem that has been recorded at Salaga South too. Northen Regional Secretary of the NPP, Sulley Salifu confirmed the anomalies to Citi News but gave the assurance that everything will be rectified.
