NS Politics 101 Whenever a vote is requested in the legislature - TopicsExpress

NS Politics 101 Whenever a vote is requested in the legislature the opposition can request a recorded vote. Once a recorded vote is requested bells ring stopping the legislature for an hour, once the hour is up MLAs do a recorded vote. The recorded vote is a democratic tool used by the opposition to slow down the passing of bills and to make sure their views are heard. Everytime a recorded vote is called it costs the tax payers approximately $2500. So knowing this oppositions in the past used it but did not abuse it. The record for calling for a recorded vote in one 24 sitting was 3, that is until tonight. Tonight Jamie Bailey and the Tories took a page out of Harpers play book and called for a recorded vote 8 times, stopping the legislature for 8 hours and costing the tax payers about $20,000. But its not just the money it was the oppostion having to be told over and over again to stay on topic and to debate the bill and not waste time. I love my job I really do but these Harper/Bailey tatics are the reason the public is so turned off of politics, we should be demanding more from our politicians. Sorry for the rant it has been a long day I am now going to sneak in and kiss my son whom I havent seen all day and crawl in besides my loving and understanding wife!
