NSW Police Force acknowledge the official public launch of road safety foundation ‘Little Blue Dinosaur’ on the Central Coast today (Sunday 23 November 2014). The launch will be held at 10.45am at Terrigal Surf Life-Saving Club – 1 Terrigal Esplanade, Terrigal. The foundation was set-up as a memorial to Thomas McLaughlin, who died after being hit by a car at MacMasters Beach, on Monday 6 January 2014. The event will be a fundraiser for the development of future ‘child-focused’ road safety campaigns and creative road safety resources, for preschool and school-aged children. The key messages of the Little Blue Dinosaur Launch will kick off with a summer road safety campaign – focused specifically on child safety on or near roadways within holiday locations. The community messages are simple: ‘Holiday Time – Slow Down Kids Around’ and ‘Hold my hand,’ which is supported with Little Blue Dinosaur designed Safety Signage placed around roadways on the Central Coast. Police will be in attendance and will speak at the launch, as well as have information on hand about road safety to provide the community. Traffic and Highway Patrol’s, Inspector Phil Brooks, said one of the aspects the Foundation will highlight is the recognition of different roadway environments and how children can forget learned road rules when in holiday mode. “We regularly talk to our children about what to do at school crossings and on main roads, but we don’t necessarily talk to them about road safety while on holidays. “Little Blue Dinosaur are highlighting the need to talk to children about recognising and understanding the different roadway environments they are in, as well as the potential dangers which are existent on all roads. “This includes whether they be large or small, or visually different as to what kids are used to, such as in these holiday locations” he said. The Little Blue Dinosaur Foundation aims to: Champion the review of road safety within Holiday Towns (beach/rural hamlets), where infrastructure caters for residential populations, not seasonal population spikes. Advocate for change, specifically the introduction of safety improvements to Holiday Town (beach /rural hamlet) roadways. It is our hope that this may take the form of a specific and uniform set of traffic/road conditions that could fit these identified areas nationally. Produce and distribute age specific literature to educate young children about road safety, specifically safety around differing roadway environments. In the future, we also plan to facilitate support services for families who have lost a child in sudden and tragic circumstances “Little Blue Dinosaur Helpers”.
