NSW RFS members are part of a multi-agency effort being led by the Department of Primary Industries to rid Sydney of Red Fire Ants. The ants, believed to have arrived in Port Botany via a container ship earlier this month, inflict painful bites on people and pets. If allowed to spread, they have to potential to transform backyards and parks into no go zones. They will also have a devastating impact on agriculture if allowed to spread further afield. Crews will today doorknock residents in the Port Botany area as a part of Operation RID, which is conducting backyard checks for Red Fire Ants with the help of sniffer dogs.
