NT installs free WiFi hotspots The Nepal Telecom (NT) has provided free WiFi service in some public places of the capital to promote its WiMax wireless broadband service. The company said that customers can enjoy the free service in those locations for three months. Tribhuwan International Airport, Bir Hospital, Teaching Hospital, Hanuman Dhoka Durbar Square Dabali, Kathmandu Metropolitan City office, Gangalal Hospital, Central Investigation Bureau and the NT office are some of the places where WiFi is being provided free of cost. “We are providing the free WiFi as the locations are in test phases,” said Guna Kesari Pradhan, spokesperson of the NT. The state owned company has been working on a plan to make the service available in 1,538 places, in 500 hot spots to be installed in the major cities. Prashan said that the NT might also provide free WiFi in hot spots to be installed outside the capital, dependent upon the billing system being developed. As per the NT, the speed of data service in free locations is up to 3 Mbps for downloads and 1 Mbps for uploads. Once the NT completes work over its billings, customers will have to buy vouchers for WiFi service. The WiMax project aims to have completed the installation of all hot spots within the current fiscal year. Also known as Broadband Wireless Access, WiMAX is part of the 4G technology, launched in November last year.
