NTV NEWS UPDATE HIV/AIDS RESPONSE In the 1990s, Uganda made significant gains in the fight against HIV and AIDS, but the gains made have been watered by the high rates of infection and risk factors especially in urban areas. HIV/AIDS infection rates stand at 8.7 percent in urban areas compared to 7.0 in rural areas. At least 300 new infections are recorded every day in Uganda according to recent research. The UNAIDS Country Director Musa Bungudu has challenged local leaders, among them mayors and district leaders to take the lead in the fight against HIV/AIDS. He was speaking at a conference organized by the Alliance of Mayors and Initiative for Community Action on Aids at Local Level in Kampala. The meeting is meant to devise means to scale up HIV/AIDs prevention services in the country.
