She hurried into the house and heard the sound of water running above her. That meant Katie was awake and in the shower. Sarah had already showered, but she still needed to apply some make-up and run a comb through her hair. Shed just reached the top of the stairs when the telephone rang. She moved quickly toward the bookcase to pick up the extension. Hello? Hi, Sarah, this is Martha. Oh, Martha, I just noticed the time. Are you already there? Im still at home, Martha said. Im glad I caught you. I just tried your cell phone, but there was no answer. Im sorry, Sarah said. I was outside. Im afraid I cant make it for coffee after all, Martha said. Ernies not feeling well and I dont want to leave him alone. Oh, dear. Sarah settled onto the love seat. Is it some kind of bug? I guess so. Hes been feeling off for a couple of days now. Well, tell him I hope he feels better soon. Im sure he will, Martha said. In fact, lets go ahead and plan that picnic for our granddaughters for the day after tomorrow. The girls are coming home from camp today, so theyll have time to settle in.
