NUL library upgraded By Ntsebeng Motsoeli MASERU — The National University of Lesotho (NUL) has purchased an American Millennium Pack integrated library system to replace the outdated Integrated Tertiary Software (ITS) system that is now considered outdated in the academic world. There has been concern from the university staff and students that the library was no longer serving their modern, academic demands, while also blaming it for their lack of research. The NUL Director of Communications and Marketing, Phumla Moleko, said the library staff is going through intensive training to understand the new system. “The training will end in March, then the system will be introduced to the university staff and students, with operations starting soon after,” Moleko said. The university’s librarian, Matšeliso Moshoeshoe- Chadzingwa, said the new system would make information accessibility easy, faster and efficient —something she said was lacking with the outdated one. “We were struggling with the old system, which was a donation by the Dutch and was not designed specifically for library-use,” Moshoeshoe-Chadzingwa said. “The new system will also allow us to enjoy our membership in the Southern African Bibliographic Information Network (SABIN) and we will be able to access information from other libraries.” With the new system, Moshoeshoe-Chadzingwa said the NUL managers and users would be able to inter-lend books with other universities in the sub-region. The system was designed by American librarians who understand the needs of a good library, she further said. Acting NUL Registrar, ‘Masefinela Mphuthing, applauded the library staff for their perseverance in ensuring the university acquires “a versatile system” for ease of use and management of operations. *Lestimes*
