NUSOJ Exposes Bogus Claim by Top Civil Servant 23 August 2013 As the union representing the vast majority of Somali journalists, the National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) would want to set the record straight following the publication of a statement by the spokesperson of the Presidency of Somalia, Mr. Abdirahman Omar Osman, on the work of the so-called “Technical committee on media law reform”. The key facts are: 1) NUSOJ has never been part of or participated in any activity of this committee which was set up by Somali public servants working under the supervision of foreign operatives. This draft is against the rights and freedoms of Somali media. 2) NUSOJ has been campaigning against the new draft media law, and has made public its total opposition to such a law. As such, it would have never taken part in a committee whose only brief is to promote a draft law the union and the independent media are actively seeking to circumvent. 3) The claim made by Abdirahman Omar Osman and his fraudulent attempt to add the union to the list of supporting organisations are blatantly false and misleading. It shows to what extent he is using the public office he claims to represent in a clumsy attempt to misguide public opinion in Somalia and misinform the world community, in the face of extensive condemnation and rejection of the law he is promoting. It is unconscionable that Abdirahman Omar Osman, a former director of Radio Bar Kulan, is abusing the high public office he serves at the Villa Somalia in order to settle scores with the union, following the allegations it made regarding labour rights abuses at the radio.
