NUTRITION TIP: What is whey protein? Whey is one of the two proteins that make up milk (the other is casein). There are 3 main types of whey. Whey Protein Concentrate (WPC) contains low amounts of fat and carbs (lactose, which is the sugar found in milk). It can contain anywhere from 30% to 90% protein. Whey Protein Isolate (WPI) is processed further to remove most of the fat and lactose, so it’s the best choice for those who are lactose intolerant. It usually contains 90% or more protein. Whey Protein Hydrolysate (WPH) is the “predigested” form of whey as it has undergone partial hydrolysis – a process necessary for the body to absorb protein. The protein from cow’s milk is about 20% whey and 80% casein. An indication of how beneficial whey is to our body is the fact that human breast milk protein is about 90% whey and 10% casein during early lactation, and that levels out to about 50% whey, 50% casein in late lactation. – Fabian.
