NWS Shreveport Partners, Another cold arctic airmass is invading the area. Temps are already in the lower to mid 30s across the area...and with sunset these temps will drop quickly into the 20s. A Hard Freeze Warning is in effect for much of the area tonight...as temps are expected to fall well into the teens and lower 20s tonight. The Hard Freeze Warning is valid from 12:00 AM to 9:00 AM Friday and will include mainly areas along and North of the I-20 corridor...and a few counties and parishes just south of I-20. Impacts associated with a hard freeze warning include... -An extended period of well below freezing temperatures which could be hazardous for people (especially the elderly)...livestock and pets. -Rupture of exposed water pipes are also common and very likely if precautions are not taken. -Be sure to protect any sensitive crops or vegetation that will be exposed to these very cold temperatures. A Winter Weather Advisory is also in effect for the southern fringes of the ArkLaTex. Sleet and snow have been falling across the area this afternoon... and this activity will likely continue into the evening and overnight hours as it transitions to all snow. With temperatures already near freezing...this snow will likely start accumulating shortly after sunset as temps drop below freezing. One to two inches of snow will be possible in the advisory area. Impacts associated with this winter weather advisory include... -Snow accumulations making travel hazardous especially on bridges and overpasses as they may become slick. -In addition...roadways may already be wet from liquid rainfall that fell earlier. Below freezing temperatures will allow this water to freeze on area roadways beneath the accumulating snow. -Visibilities could drop below 1/4 mile in blowing snow...so motorists are urged to use caution and reduce driving speeds.
