NY Mets 2nd baseman Daniel Murphy chose to miss opening day and take 3 days of paternity leave to fly home to be with his wife for the birth of their child. In my book, this is a no-brainer-- of course a father would miss work to be there for the birth of his child! Of course he would take paternity leave to bond with the baby in those first precious days of life. Yet, former NFL quarterback and radio commentator Boomer Esiason thinks differently. This morning, Boomer sounded off on Daniel Murphy and his wife, and Murphys choice to put his family ahead of baseball: “Bottom line, that’s not me. I wouldn’t do that. Quite frankly, I would have said ‘C-section before the season starts. I need to be at Opening Day. I’m sorry, this is what makes our money, this is how we’re going to live our life, this is going to give my child every opportunity to be a success in life.’” Here is what I have to say to Boomer: You, sir, are an asshat. You obviously have your priorities screwed up if you think the most important thing you can offer your child is money or consumer goods instead of a loving, solid family environment that leaves NO DOUBT in the childs mind, ever, that THE most important thing in the world is people and the supportive, nurturing relationships between them. Being ale to pay tuition to the most expensive university in the world is great, but it sure pales when compared to having ones father there when it really matters, every single time. Being able to access the best health care in the world with cash is awesome, but what comfort is that if youre sick in a hospital and can only see Daddy on the TV because he put playing a sport ahead of being by your side to comfort and support you emotionally? Growing up in a McMansion is nice, but it could be mighty lonely if youre there with just mom because dad is away earning a living chasing a ball on a sports field instead of putting you ahead of chasing a ball and a buck. Kids do not thrive because their parents bank account is stuffed with professional ball-playing money, Boomer. Kids thrive because their parents spend time with them, loving them, talking to them, teaching them, PUTTING THEM FIRST, literally from birth. Shame on you, Boomer. Shame on you, sir.
