NYC: Theater: The Realistic Jones. Will Eno is a very quirky writer (Thom Paine and Middletown). His milieu is really downtown, so seeing him on Broadway was sure to be an event. Hes an acquired taste and not for everyone. This is a quirky play that doesnt have much plot, if any. An older man on the way out said he thought it would, at just 90 minutes never end. But the four characters fears, loneliness, inability to communicate or ennui are all present and intriguing to watch. The dialogue is deceptively simple and sometimes feels post-absurdist--between Beckett and Pinter. Some is very funny. Tallulah Bankhead said about a Pinter play, Theres less here than meets the eye. I thought that here, at first, but by the end it had won me over. You dont come out of the theater wowed, but you shouldnt. Its not kind of play. Without a star cast, this wouldnt make it to Broadway. The ensemble is A+: Marisa Tomei, Michael C. Hall, Toni Collette and Tracy Letts. Sam Gold did a lovely job directing a quartet that worked together seamlessly.
